Getting a root canal is a treatment that helps prevent tooth pain. In rare cases it is possible that you suffer from toothache even after the treatment. Many think that root canal treatment administered by an expert dentist will make the pain disappear completely. If not, then it means the dentist did not do a proper job. However, this is not the case. According to experts, there are chances your tooth will continue to hurt even after successful root canal treatment.

There are three main reasons why your tooth pain does not disappear with successful treatment:

  • The tissue which is inside the tooth is already infected because of decay and trauma.
  • Infection of the tooth spreads to the ligament
  • Patient already suffers from toothache and after root canal treatment of a particular tooth the tooth next to it, if infected pains.

The reason for toothache is root canal and not the dentist. Whenever you suffer from severe infection and toothache, immediate treatment can save you a tooth or further complications as once the infection spreads deep into the bones then it is going to be very difficult to remove the root cause of the infection. This makes your bones weaker and unable to take pressure of the root canal treatment.

Antibiotics must be taken as prescribed by your dentist after root canal. Your dentist will prescribe you the required dose of antibiotics which you must take diligently. You must also take proper care of oral hygiene after the root canal treatment.

If after the treatment you are fine and do not experience any pain but the pain starts after a few days then it is a sign of failed root canal. This does not happen very often but if it does, then you need to either go for root canal again or must extract your tooth.

It is always better to bear pain and opt for root canal then extracting your tooth. If a little pain can save your tooth then it is worth trying root canal. Root canal thus is the last option to save your tooth from infection and decay.
