Many complain that their tooth aches when they eat sweets. Otherwise they do not face any problem. There may not be any cavities or prior root canal treatment neither may they have opted for whitening or cleaning treatment before.

This problem is known as Dentin Hypersensitivity. In such cases, teeth are very sensitive to certain tastes. Some teeth are sensitive to extreme cold or very hot food and some are sensitive to sweets. The pain or discomfort will remain for a short period of time. In other words, the pain starts and ends very quickly.

The reasons behind Dentin hypersensitivity are -

  • Wrong way of brushing – Many are not aware of the right way of brushing. They use hard bristle toothbrush. Tooth brush must be changed every 3 to 4 months before it starts damaging your teeth.
  • Teeth whitening – Dentin Hypersensitivity can be a side effect of teeth whitening treatment. If it is so, then there are chances that it will disappear after few days. If your teeth are sensitive for a prolonged period of time after the treatment, then it is imperative that you visit your dentist at the earliest.
  • Trauma – Any acute trauma like chipped tooth or fractures as well as tooth abrasion can result in sensitivity.
  • Polishing the root surface can be another reason for sensitive tooth. A gap can form due to polishing and this can result in sensitivity.
  • Poor diet – Poor eating habits is one of the vital reasons for this condition. 60mg of Vitamin C is very essential for oral health. If your daily intake is lesser than that then you may be prone to different oral problems.
  • Tooth decay or any other periodontal disease can also result in teeth sensitivity. This can be treated with the help of a professional dentist.

Many treatment options are available for sensitive teeth. A dentist can suggest the right treatment depending on the exact cause and symptoms. One effective treatment includes fluoride therapy. There are many home remedies too for sensitive tooth such as using fluoride toothpaste, eating a lot of citrus fruits and using fluoride mouthwash.
