Today there are many treatment options available for teeth whitening. Everybody wants a good, attractive smile and since it is possible, many go for treatments that claim to offer the best results. There are pros and cons for every treatment method. Certain treatments are good on a short term basis but in the long term they result in undesirable and dangerous side effects.

Following are some of the side effects and dangers you should know about before you opt for the treatment.

  • Zoom treatment is based on hydrogen peroxide. Dentists will mix an activator along with the gel before applying this to your teeth. Many people are allergic to hydrogen peroxide. If you are one of them, it is in your interest to inform your dentist in advance.
  • Once you do whitening to your teeth they become very sensitive to very hot or very cold foodstuff. You should avoid drinking very hot tea or coffee. In the same manner cold coffee or cold drinks may also harm your teeth. It might result in staining on your newly whitened teeth. Most of the times this sensitivity is only for a certain period of time but you must be alert and ready for the changes.
  • Some people can tolerate small to moderate pain with the treatment. Sometimes during the treatment nerves of the teeth become inflamed due to dehydration during the zoom process or due to tooth exposure to elevated temperature for more than required time.
  • Your dentist will make sure that you fill in all the cavities present before you go for the zoom treatment. Again after the zoom treatment there is a possibility that you will have to fill some of the cavities again as sometimes the filling becomes soft as a side effect of the chemicals and may fall out.
  • In rare cases, the root of a tooth may start dissolving from both sides as a result of this procedure. Scientists and dentists are still not sure about this but according to studies such incidents are higher in teeth that have undergone the root canal before the whitening treatment.
