Question from Zeva in NY: I chipped my front tooth.  It’s a small amount and I really don’t want to have work done on it. I know that to even bond it, some of my tooth would have to be shaved. On top of that, I know that bonding can’t be whitened…so I would have to match the right color and it would be a pain!

Hi Zeva,

I love your name by the way– really rare! Now, you have a chipped tooth but are unsure about getting it bonded. Well if the chip is really small and it isn’t sensative and doesn’t bother you than leave it as it is. The problem we run into at our office is when it is a large chip the nerves can get involved and it is necessary to cover it with bonding or a crown.

There are so many different shades with composite bonding and they will definitely be able to match it to your teeth. You could whiten your teeth before hand so that they can match the shade to the whitened teeth. Over several years, the bonding may get stained and need to be replaced, though.
