Gum disease is otherwise called periodontal disease. When a person is infected with gum disease it means that his gums and the tissues surrounding it are inflamed. Gum diseases begin when there is plaque on the teeth. Plaque is a white substance that is formed on the teeth when the bacteria, mixes with the starchy food particles, sugar and the saliva. This plaque if not cleaned properly, hardens into tartar, which can be removed only by a dentist, as it is very hard. In due course it leads to gingivitis.

Some of the symptoms of gum disease are

  • Swollen and/or red gums
  • Bleeding due to brushing and flossing
  • Receding gums
  • Bad breath
  • Loose teeth or gaps between them
