Is it Normal For Teeth to Hurt After Dentist Cleaning?

Dentist cleaning is a routine maintenance to ensure that your gums and teeth are healthy and strong. Proper cleanings performed twice per year are highly recommended for all individuals, but very few people follow through. However, many individuals experience pain after a cleaning around the teeth, gums, and between the teeth. But is this normal to feel?

In many cases some discomfort is normal after a cleaning. Long lasting pain that is disabling is not normal and should be discussed with your dentist. Sometimes the hygienists are unnecessarily rough when perform scrapings and cleanings, which can lead to a pain in the gums and teeth. Individuals that have a root problem, wisdom teeth growing, or cavities will generally feel more pain than others.

If you have no visible problems with your teeth, then the extra plaque is likely to blame. Build up of excess plaque requires a rougher scraping than usual, which can cause bleeding and slight sensitivity. To avoid this, brush and floss daily and get two cleanings a year. Not flossing WILL cause bleeding and soreness because your mouth simply isn’t used to being taken care of properly! There should be no pain if you take care of your teeth properly on a regular basis.

However, one of the biggest problems is pain that is not caused by any of the above. Sometimes hygienists are particularly unprofessional and abusive to the gums and tooth surfaces. This can lead to severe pain, discomfort, bleeding, and even permanent sensitivity development. If you floss regularly and do everything like you are supposed to, then your hygienist is likely to blame. Routine cleanings should not be painful or cause severe discomfort if you are doing everything right. If you suspect that your hygienist is being particularly rude, then tell someone in the office and request a new hygienist to clean your teeth.

In general it is normal to feel pain after a teeth cleaning, but if it lasts longer than a few hours and happens repeatedly at your visits, then something is wrong with your hygienists cleaning jobs.
