How Long Should My Mouth Hurt After Having A Tooth Pulled?
There can be various reasons why you may have to remove your tooth. It can be for the sake of the health of a particular tooth. You may have to provide enough space for the tooth to grow or treat the tooth because it is in a bad condition where your dentist does not have an option but to extract it. Extracting tooth is not a very serious process and rarely does it lead to complications. The only problem you may experience is the pain associated with it.
When the surgery is in progress, your dentist will administer local anaesthesia so that you will not experience the pain. After the surgery before the anaesthesia wears out, dentists will prescribe pain killers in specific doses that you need to follow. Along with the painkiller you will be asked to take special care for a few days till the pain subsides. Here are a few facts on tooth extraction –
- Your tooth can hurt for 3 to 4 days. Recovery duration varies from person to person. Some may recover in just a day and for others it can even take a week’s time.
- If you take proper care after the surgery, your pain will recede faster. There are certain do’s and don’ts to be followed diligently after your tooth has been pulled out.
- You must take complete rest for a day or two. No work and no exercise for at least 24 hours after the surgery.
- Good diet is very essential. Liquid and protein rich diet can heal the area of extraction faster.
- Good 8 to 10 hours of sleep is necessary after the surgery. Resting and relaxation can make your pain disappear much faster.
- Drinking a lot of water and fruit juices will help in reducing pain. Orange juice is very good for teeth.
- Do not rinse or brush your mouth at least for 12 hours after the surgery.
Taking antibiotic is very essential as it will be difficult for you to bear the pain. It can help in healing the area faster. You should take medicine as per the advice of your dentist. Overdose of medicine can give you more pain and can cause swelling in the mouth.
