Teeth whitening are one of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures done in the world. White teeth are highly sought after, because it is affordable and easy to do. Teeth bleach is safe for your teeth but overuse can cause extensive enamel damage if it is not applied properly. Certain bleaching agents are shown to cause gum problems, but can they hurt your tongue?

The likelihood of teeth bleaching agents actually hurting your tongue is quite slim. The gentle formula is designed to lift stains from the teeth, and has little effect on the tongue surface. However, some individuals report that their tongue had a great deal of sensitivity after a teeth bleaching session. With over the counter whitening gels a large amount of people may feel more tongue discomfort after using the product.

The main problem with tongue pain after using bleaching for your teeth is that individuals do not know when to stop using the products. Excessive use of professional and over the counter treatments will cause more than tongue pain. It can cause damage to the enamel, gums, and more. There are cases of individuals getting teeth removed because the excessive use of products has worn away their teeth so badly that they began to rot.

One of the most common reasons why individuals feel pain on their tongue is due to sores. Sometimes the tongue is inflamed with little bumps or open wounds. The bleaching gels get into these and can cause burning sensations and pain in the mouth.

To minimize discomfort you can take extra steps to take better care of your tongue. Using a soft brush to clean the tongue and roof of your mouth can reduce sores and other bacteria build up. When these are removed you are less likely to get tooth bleaching agents into those sores that will eventually cause pain. If you have taken all of the necessary measures to eliminate pain in your mouth, but your teeth bleaching kits still cause discomfort, then it is probably time to cease using these products for the future.
